The Tare app and your mail

Tare is an email client that runs on your computer. It connects straight to your mail provider, whether that is Google, Microsoft or an IMAP server. Your messages, your calendar, your contacts and the logins to your mailboxes stay on your device and with that provider. They are not sent to our servers, and we cannot read them.

Google user data

When you connect a Google account, Tare asks Google for access to the following, and uses each only for what is said here.

  • Your Gmail messages. To show your mailbox and search it, to mark messages read or unread, star, archive and move them to Trash, and to send the mail you write. Tare never deletes mail permanently.
  • Your Gmail settings. To list your send-as addresses and your filters, and to create a forwarding filter when you ask for one.
  • Your calendar events and free/busy times. To show today's meetings, to see when the people you want to meet are busy, and to create an event with invitations when you confirm a time.
  • Your contacts and your organisation's directory. To suggest people while you type a recipient. The suggestions are shown and not stored.
  • Your name and profile photo. To show which account is which, and for the From line of the mail you send.

Where it is kept, and for how long

What Tare fetches from Google is stored in a database on your computer, and the sign-in tokens are kept in the macOS keychain. None of it is stored on our servers. It stays on your device until you remove the account in Tare, which deletes its mail from the device, or until you delete the app and its data. You can withdraw Tare's access at any time from your Google Account.

Who it is shared with

We never receive this data, so we do not sell it, share it, use it for advertising or use it to train AI models, and nobody at Tare can read it. The app on your device sends it somewhere other than your mail provider only in these cases, and only when you ask:

  • AI features. Summaries, drafts and similar features run on a model on your computer, where nothing leaves it. If you instead choose your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription in Settings, or connect another AI service with your own key, the text needed for what you asked, such as the conversation being summarised, is sent to that provider from your computer, under your agreement with them.
  • The command line. If you install the tare command, programs you run on your own computer, such as a script or an AI assistant, can ask the app for your mail. Nothing is sent anywhere unless such a program sends it.

Limited Use

Tare's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

What our service does hold

The part we run knows your Tare account: its email address and name, your team, your plan, and which devices are signed in. Payments are handled by Stripe. Cloud Sync stores your settings, never your mail, encrypted with a key that only your devices hold. Read statuses are off until you turn them on; then, when a message you sent is opened, we record the time, the network and country of the request and the mail program, for 90 days, and never who the message was to or what it said.

If you join the waiting list, we keep the address you gave and whatever you chose to answer about how you would use Tare, and use them only to decide who to invite and to send the invitation.
